But, as luck would have it, her brothers can’t stand the dude. They’re jealous and angry, wanting to be the ones calling the shots about her life. Instead of letting her choose, they quietly plan to end things for good. One night, without her knowing, they actually kill her lover so she can’t be with him anymore

     When Lisabetta finds out the truth, she’s crushed. She can’t move on, so she decides to keep a piece of him close. She takes his head, puts it in a pot, and plants fresh basil in it. Every day, she waters the basil and cares for it, almost like it’s the last bit of love she has left. The basil grows strong, almost as if it feeds on her sadness and love.

     Eventually, her brothers find out about the basil plant. They’re disgusted and throw it away, thinking it’ll help her forget everything. Instead, it just breaks her even more. Without the basil, she loses the last thing that made her feel close to her love, and she gets so sad and weak that she dies from her heartbreak.
